Well, it’s official, ol’ Jack isn’t going to whip his MPs into voting for or against Mullet-head Hoeppner’s Bill c-391. And for what? Because he never whips his MPs for private members’ bills? Or is it because Jack simply wants to keep his few rural and western ridings?
If the latter, it will be counter productive in the next election; NDP will lose other seats. In fact, I think Outremont just became that much easier for Martin Cauchon to win as that is where the Polytechnique is. There is even a small park in the area named after the date of which the massacre took place. The survivors of the Polytechnique had attempted to plead with Layton to change his mind. They had also mentioned on a few occasions they would campaign to make sure the NDP would lose some seats in the next election. We must remember that this registry was born out of the Polytechnique massacre over a decade ago. With or without their help or the help from other pro-gun control groups, I suspect that will be exactly what will happen.
As for Iggy, he is still whipping his MPs into voting along the party line. He also had a few proposed modifications to offer such as decriminalizing a first offense of not registering a firearm, streamlining the registration process and making it so that there would be no costs to the gun owner. I think many folks find that reasonable. So do most of the eight Liberal MPs who voted to scrap the registry previously. They have hinted they will vote along party lines.
Since Layton did not even attempt to propose any compromise to maintain the registry as Iggy had done, one has to really wonder. To me, this is further evidence that Layton and the NDP seem to be losing their progressive values. I also get the feeling if there was some small part of him that simply wanted to contrary the Liberals as he has been known to do in recent times. Surely, he must realize that this decision will cause seat loss in the next election. Perhaps even losing more seats than the original twelve.
Looks like the survival of gun control is on Jack now.
And I would like to be spared the whole application process being sufficient and the like. With Steve and the Harpercons, it’s all about gradually cooking frogs. Preparing for when they get their majority and what would come next. I see gun control being eliminated; gun laws even more lax than in the U.S.
No, we’re just going to build even more expensive big ol’ private prisons to be tough on crime. If anybody was bitching about the start up costs of the long gun registry; just wait for the bill on those big-assed prisons.
If anyone continues chattering over an NDP and Liberal coalition, I would really like to know how they see this happening, especially if the long gun registry is killed.
Here are some statistics from StatsCan regarding crimes with firearms since the registry.
