Catch 22 Conservatives Poster Unveiled–And the Firing of Ric Salutin

Yes, Gary Shaul and Nick Fillmore had requested that I design a poster for the Catch 22 Harper Conservatives campaign given my background in graphic arts. I was too happy to volunteer my time to this project.  The goal was to at least have an 8.5″ x 11″ ready for the Catch 22 meeting in Ottawa tomorrow. I won’t be there because I’m in Montreal; I have to work & my husband wishes to take me out for my Birthday (eeekkk!! Funny how Birthdays are no fun past 40). I encourage those in the Ottawa area to go.

Anyway, the folks at  Catch 22 wrote the copy and came up with the original concept and I put it together. I changed the backgrounds for both Prentice and Flaherty, I think I gave them very suitable backgrounds, what say y’all?

Upon receiving the confirmation email from Nick that he had received the pdf of the posters (there is a grayscale version as well) and that it would be a go for the meeting in Ottawa tomorrow,  I just received this following email:

Denounce the Globe and Mail for firing columnist Rick Salutin

I don’t need to tell you how few progressive voices there are in the mainstream media whether it’s TV, radio or newspapers. Someone from outside the country observing the media would assume that this is a reactionary country with virtually no progressive tradition.

One of the few voices on the left that has been consistent, imaginative, thought-provoking and fearless is that of Rick Salutin, columnist for the G&M since 1991.

I just found out today that he was fired.  I asked him if he had been told why, he said no.

But this kind of political action must be responded to, even if our chance of reversing such a crass decision is virtually nil. If we don’t respond it will be implicit support for the decision – the ideological gate-keepers at the Globe will gloat and claim no one cared anyway.

We do care.  Rick upheld the best of what Canada has been and can be again.

If you are not a regular reader of Rick’s column then you should not write a letter. But if you are amongst the tens of thousands who do, write to the Globe and tell them what you think

On this one, you don’t need any help from me – just say in your own words what you think of the continuing efforts to diminish Canada – in terms of the role of government, our role in the world and the democratic debate which depends on a diversity of views.

The letters editor is at:    [email protected]

Copy the following:

John Stackhouse, the Edito-in-Chief:   [email protected]

Neil Campbell, Executive editor:  [email protected]

Sinclair Stewart, National Editor: [email protected]

I bet the Blogging SupposiTories are going to be in a festive mood now–Groan!!  I never want to hear how the mainstream media in Canada is always Liberal!  Not again.

  • Excellent choices for the photos, the C.R.A.P. party never looked so shifty and incompetent

  • I enjoyed Rick, even when I disagreed with him.

It’s corporatist agenda all over the place these days.

Well done, CK! LOVE the poster! We could also include “Kitty Hawk”, Harp’s supposed kitten – and “Renta Dog” – Pistol Pete’s semi-present hound.
And yes, re Rick’s firing! G&M is really the Grey Lady now! I’d sure like to know why. And who decided??! I’m writing, sharing Murray’s call-out too.
Thanks. And HAPPPY BIRTHDAY!@!!! Drink a couple of bottles of wine with giant amounts of chocolate! The headache’ll be worth it!
    CHEERS to you today!

  • Kim:

Yes, love the poster. Nice touch on Flaherty’s background. Happy Birthday ck, hope you have a great day!
