S&P on downgrade: “…the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues, a position we believe Congress reinforced by passing the act.”

Just in case you didn’t get that the first time around. This is a point the Democrats (and progressive media/bloggers need to hammer) for the next few weeks. But they won’t. The right is massed with talking points blaming the left for the defeat. But the text of the S&P downgrade doesn’t specifically call out the Democratic party or the left. It does call out the Republicans (and the tea party, by default).

Unfortunately, Obama and his party are too busy making nice instead of fighting for the country. If there ever was a time for Obama to acknowledge his pussy footing with the intransigant GOP has backfired, it is now. I feel this moment is Obama’s biggest test and the signal of what kind of president he will be for the remainder of his term.

Will he be the professor, bowled over by accusations of socialism, trying to be the adult in the room or will he shame a dimwitted and unscrupulous media and inspire Americans to fight for themselves and not give everything away to the GOP and the rich every time? I fear the former but hope for the latter. It’s too bad hope has become such a dirty word.

UPDATE: In a shocker, right-leaning Washington Post has the headline, “Aggressive GOP majority prompted standoff”. Wow. Somebody gets it on the right.
