“Moral convictions”, Republicans and bullying

You gotta love Republicans. In Michigan, the Republican-heavy Senate has passed a new anti-bullying bill that promotes bullying by giving perpetrators the ‘moral conviction’ right to bully on behalf of their religion. In effect, bullying is AOK in Michigan if you do it and claim religious reasons.

Michigan Dems say the Republican Senate gutted an anti-bullying bill when they added a clause that allows bullying based on “moral convictions.

SB 137, also called “Matt’s Safe School Law” after 14-year old Matt Eppling who committed suicide in 2002 after being bullied, was approved in the state Senate by a 26-11 party line vote, and will now head to the House.

The bill lays out what exactly constitutes bullying, but in one key part it says that the legislation does not prohibit First Amendment rights, and “does not prohibit a statement of a sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction of a school employee, school volunteer, pupil, or a pupil’s parent or guardian.”

Anti-bullying is anti-Republican, anti-Conservative. Bullying is what they do. Overturn any conservative and what do you get? A streak of authoritarian meanness as wide as the white stripe of a skunk.

It’s already started happening here too. Remember ol’ Chuckles McVety’s disgusting newspaper ads going against the Toronto school district’s anti-bullying campaign? As well as those equally disgusting pamphlets passed around the latter part of Timmy Hudak’s campaign?

so it’s totally cool then for a student who follows Islam to call a teacher who shows her face a whore and refuse to follow her instructions because she’s a woman? Those defenders of faiths would agree to that, right?
