The war on Hilary Rosen, Nancy Pelosi, Michelle Obama, Rachel Maddow and progressive women

So Ann Romney’s feelings got hurt by a single phrase from a single CNN pundit and the whole world goes crazy. Those seven words – “never worked a day in her life” – have unleashed an unbridled attack from not just from the right but from the entire industrial media complex against the person who carelessly spoke those words, propagating the seven words into a war against all of the left.

It’s as if every progressive shares Rosen’s view. It’s as if the right has never uttered a misogynist word. Forgotten in all this is the steady stream of sexist and vicious language towards most progressive women. Rachel Maddow is a dyke. Michelle Obama is referred to as “Mooch” and much, much worse. Hilary Rosen is an “infobabe”. The right likes to call Nancy Pelosi every insult in the book, over and over again.

But it’s those seven words, spoken by one lobbyist and CNN talking head, that are being used to paint the entire left as hateful towards women and especially women who work at home bringing up children.

But you know what really stinks? With all the hateful words spewed daily against progressive women, those seven words were the only ones to resonate with the media. It even prompted Wolf Blitzer to publicly humiliate Rosen, shaming her into apologizing and wringing every bit of soul and heart from the woman for words that were ill chosen but true – Ann Romney hasn’t had to choose between raising a family and working for money to feed and house that family.

That’s obviously what Rosen meant; she just didn’t have the skill or grace to phrase her words with more care. And we all lose because any slip up, however tiny, by a progressive and the shit hits the media fan.

I suspect Ann’s choice was largely a function of the Morman patriarchy. Furthermore she had a ton of help (5 maids now and who knows how many nannies). So, no, she hasn’t worked, hasn’t struggled to feed and clothe her family. I think the hysteria on the right was to deflect what was a true statement. The echo chamber in the rest of the media is shameful, especially as they ignore the foul things said about the progressive women.
