Romney’s Harper-like speech blows up in his face. US media pounces.

Remember Stephen Harper’s 1997 speech to a group of Americans, where he called Canada, “a Northern European welfare state in the worst sense of the term”? That quote, and many other similar Canada-hating ones, should have gone viral and remained viral. But it hasn’t and won’t, because well, the media is not going to shoot itself in the foot and piss off the HarperCons. As they see it, it’s not their job. Plus, there’s no video of the speech to be uploaded to youtube.

Romney made a similarly-themed speech in May to a room full of millionaires. He wasn’t as lucky as Harper. In a secretly-recorded video running rampant on youtube and currently setting the media on fire, Mitt Romney shows his true colours. Romney’s America-hating speech demeans 47 percent of the country – Obama supporters – as being “dependent on government” and “my job is not to worry about those people.” Veddy, veddy Harper.

While he is obviously feeding his audience what they want to hear – the politician seems to take different positions according to whom he is talking – there can be no mistaking he is channeling his own inner views and they are not pretty.

Of course, while the ‘liberal media’ is reporting this for what it is – Romney shooting himself in the foot one more time – the very conservative and very whiny National Review defiantly (and hilariously) calls it, “Romney’s Gettysburg Moment.”But giggles aside, why is it Romney’s speech, demeaning half the country, is a big deal in the US while Harper’s scandalous anti-Canada rhetoric skulks under the Canadian media’s radar? It can’t just be that there is no video.
