I knew a family in Manitoba who lost a 16 year old daughter to an illegal abortion. Wrecked the family, and hearing the story at 17 impressed me forever with the importance of legal abortion.
They didn’t find out what caused the massive infection until just before she died. Doctors thought it was pneumonia; and they finally took her out of the bedroom that she shared with her 11 year old sister.

That quote is based on – Harp Song of the Dane Women; about the ocean. Speaking to a man and asking why he would go to the ocean, which is the “old grey widow-maker”; turning women into widows.

BTW, that bit about Mary being “Ground Zero”? You mean like the World Trade Centre? Scene of the worst terrorist disaster on North American soil? How strangely fitting (albeit stupid). I’d be terrorized too, if I were a Jewish teenager in the ultra-tribal middle east of 2000-odd years ago, facing death by stoning for fornication, and having to explain my belly…

Oh, even more creepy, there’s a sort of nursery rhyme associated with the phrase: “What is woman, that you forsake her/To the claws of the grey old angel maker?”

I’m sorry, but every time I see “knitting” and “womb” in the same sentence together, I think of the classic method of illegal abortion. You know, from back in the Good Old Days when every town had one of those ladies who did them with knitting needles?
