Notes on the Cholera Crisis in Haiti

As of 1800 last evening, according to the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), there have been 2,564 cases and 194 deaths from cholera in Haiti in the past week. This represents a crude mortality of 13.26%. With prompt treatment, mortality from cholera is around 1-2%. This morning there are reports of more than 200 dead.

For Lack of Clean Water

2.5 billion people have no access to clean drinking water.

1.5 million people, mostly children, die each year from water-borne diseases and the lack of sanitation.

OK, a bunch of numbers. Meaningless, more or less. An evil man once said, One death is a tragedy, a million deaths is just a statistic.
