Imagine Helena Guergis in a Burka…

I wonder what would the reaction have been to Minister Guergis’ antics in the Charlottetown Airport, had she been wearing a Burka?

For those living in an igloo on Melville Island, Ms. Guergis remonstrated rather pithily with staff at the Charlottetown Airport when she was denied immediate and unrestricted access to her flight, describing the “Garden of the Gulf” in terms more befitting fertilizer for that garden. After banging on security glass, flinging her shoes, and otherwise behaving badly, she was allowed on the plane, the take-off being delayed for her boarding.

Suppose a woman wearing a Burka was to behave in the same manner in a Canadian Airport?

Would she be allowed to board? Would the flight be held?

Or… Would she have been Tasered, handcuffed, and thrown in the Hoosegow to await the tender attentions of CSIS and the RCMP?

This is, of course, conjecture, as rarely if ever would you see an immigrant woman of a middle Eastern culture behave in such a manner.

It would be instructive if an enterprising member of the Fifth Estate in Canada were to put this to the test.

Any takers?

    You make a good point.

Suppose a woman wearing a Burka was to behave in the same manner in a Canadian Airport?

Would she be allowed to board? Would the flight be held?

I would put my money on NO to your question.

However, let’s get away from the “woman” example for a moment. Suppose a male Conservative politician behaved in the same manner in a Canadian airport. Would HE be allowed on board? Would the flight be held for him? Answer: Yes
Would the media report on that? Yes, but probably only in passing.
Would the MANPOL be asked for his resignation: NO

    My opinion

CanNurse: Touche! You’re exactly right about that one. Sexist as well as Islamophobic them Harpercons are. Like I told someone years ago, when Stevie was moving up in politics; Be very afraid of this redneck. He’s anti-everything.

I wonder as well, if the person were, say, oh, I don’t know, Polish? There was another YVR incident this week where a polish speacking person was turned back at Vancouver airport, even as relatives were told that he hadn’t arrived.

Kim, What? Wow, I had no idea.

    Thanks for sharing that.

Further proof that McCarthyism is making a comeback stronger than ever. Yikes!

I am happy to be on board. I hope to contribute at lest three entries per week, and perhaps more if the issues seize me.

  • Helen Guergis just goes to prove that anyone in this country can grow up to be a Cabinet Minister … Well, maybe not grow up.
