I guess we shoulda known this was a comin’; the fight to repeal child labour laws in the US, after all, what would complete the Rethuglican Tea-baggin’ return to the 19th century circle better than a repeal of child labour laws?
Missouri State Sen. Jane Cunningham (R) is pushing a bill which would dramatically claw back state child labor protections. As the bill’s official summary explains:
This act modifies the child labor laws. It eliminates the prohibition on employment of children under age fourteen. Restrictions on the number of hours and restrictions on when a child may work during the day are also removed. It also repeals the requirement that a child ages fourteen or fifteen obtain a work certificate or work permit in order to be employed. Children under sixteen will also be allowed to work in any capacity in a motel, resort or hotel where sleeping accommodations are furnished. It also removes the authority of the director of the Division of Labor Standards to inspect employers who employ children and to require them to keep certain records for children they employ. It also repeals the presumption that the presence of a child in a workplace is evidence of employment.
After reading that article, the first thing that popped into my mind was widdle Sara Landriault and how she trashes universal child care programs, as well as other Blogging SupposiTories who go even further, and trash public schools and I do mean the entire concept of public schools, not the problems that ail the public school systems these days. So, you’ll forgive me if I would wage bets that those same Harpercon cheerleaders would love to repeal child labour laws here.
I wonder what Suzy ALLCAPSLOCK would think of this? I wonder if this would provide a new argument for her Fetus wars? I wonder how she would like to send her little ones off to the sweatshops everyday? She’d probably prefer it to school where they would actually learn such ungawdly things like reading a book that isn’t the bible; writing! How’s about math? And get the smelling salts for Suzy… Science!! And history!! I wonder if she has the moxy to advocate repealing child labour laws on her blog?
The Sara Palin look-a-like as well…does she have the stuff? Would sweatshops be a potential “choice for childcare”?
My guess is they would probably wait to see if it ends up on the “neo-con politically correct” list of stuff to discuss.
I may even start taking bets as to how soon into a Harpercon majority mandate Diane Finley would start feverishly working on a bill to repeal child labour laws. Oops, on second thought, I’d better not talk of taking bets, that could get me into one of Stevie’s spanking new big-assed prisons under their new “tough on crime” regime.
Yes, Charles Dickens is indeed making a come back.

What a great way to solve juvenile delinquency, the need to build schools and day care all at once, not to mention help out the parents who can’t get by with only three or four McJobs themselves! Next up legalization of methedrine so folks can work longer hours and require less food………….
One reason why widdle sara is such a moaner is she just cant resist jumping on the bandwagon to draw attention to herself. Her latest crusade is for false rape society. Of course this has nothing to do with her uncle being accused of raping a 13 yr old 35 yrs ago as reported in the halifax herald
