Not long ago, Jymn covered the CBC, coming armed with certain facts about Quebecor. A few things Quebecor won’t tell us. Let’s refresh our memories, here.
- Quebecor has received more than half a billion dollars in direct and indirect subsidies and benefits from Canadian taxpayers over the past three years, yet it is not accountable to them.
- Quebecor uses this public subsidy and its dominant position in protected industries to make record profits yet complains that its TVA television network “competes” against Radio-Canada.
- Quebecor boss Pierre Karl Péladeau has sent over a dozen letters to the Prime Minister and others in government to complain that Radio-Canada does not spend enough money advertising in his newspapers.
It’s that portion above, among others, I guess, that Quebecor and Poor Peladeau jr are taking issue with. Quebecor calls the material “defamatory”
Quebecor Media has sent Radio-Canada a letter demanding it remove allegedly defamatory material from its website.
The Montreal-based conglomerate says the information on the website of the CBC’s French-language service is false, defamatory and malicious.
It is taking the public broadcaster to task for a text titled “What Quebecor Won’t Tell You About Its Attacks On The Public Broadcaster,” as well as a document called “Examining Quebecor Media’s Free Market Message.”
We already know that Quebecor’s subsidiary, Sun TV News, pushed very hard for that ‘must carry’ license. We already know that Quebecor gets government subsidies for their periodicals.
Oh, and did I mention that Johnny-Boy Charest and the rest of the Quebec government, courtesy of the Quebec tax-payers are buying Peladeau Jr a hockey arena?
Quebecor’s letter comes a day after president Pierre Karl Peladeau told a parliamentary committee hearing his company is not engaged in a vendetta against its competitor.
Nah, just a CBC witch hunt which seems to consume much of Brian Lilley’s life, his columns, and his TV show, as well as other Sun Media columnists and/or hosts, like Ezzy Levant, of the new Fox News North or as I like to call it, the Stephen Harper infomercial channel.
Quebecor’s Sun Media division frequently publishes criticism of the CBC and has urged an end to its public funding.
But, Peladeau Jr really harbours no ill will toward CBC-Radio Canada. He probably just wants the funding of the CBC-Radio Canada to end, so there would be more for Quebecor, that should be obvious.
I do wonder if Quebecor will show love to Johnny-boy Charest in its’ coverage of him in the coming months and years leading to the next election? Yanno, to thank him for that new hockey arena Johnny-boy Charest will buy him?
I posted on my blog this morning that everyone needs to contact the CBC to support them in their fact check of Quebecor. Please everyone on SSM and abroad go to http://www.cbc.ca/contact/ and issue your full support for the CBC and tell them not to relent.
Thanks.
Logan
It really is interesting to note how those who wave the flag for free enterprise are the first to line up at the trough.
