The so-called ‘Office of Religious Freedom’ hard at work. Harper is axing all non-Christian chaplains in prisons across Canada.
The federal government is cancelling the contracts of non-Christian chaplains at federal prisons, CBC News has learned.
Inmates of other faiths, such as Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jews, will be expected to turn to Christian prison chaplains for religious counsel and guidance, according to the office of Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, who is also responsible for Canada’s penitentiaries.
Of course, the only outrage from the right you’re going to hear about this will be from the boneheads at Sun News, whining that Jews are included in this penal embargo of religious faiths, claiming that Ottawa has put Jews and Muslims in the same garbage pail of rejects from the new found land of religious freedom. Which, when you think of it, is curious. What will Harper’s BFF Bibi say?
Then there’s this (emphasis mine):
Early last month, the agency put out a request for a proposal for a Wiccan chaplain who would provide about 17 hours of service a month in B.C.
Shortly after The Canadian Press reported on the contract in September, Toews’s office issued a statement saying it would not proceed with the plan until after a review.
The spokeswoman says the federal government “is not in the business of picking and choosing which religions will be given preferential status through government funding.”

I’ve been posting about this office for awhile. Bad bad idea for both the religious and non religious – unless of course you happen to be a fundie Christian.
My Secret Atheist Blog: Office of Religious Freedom
Even got a vague response back from Minister John Baird about the situation in Indonesia with jailed Atheist Alexander Aan. His crime was posting “God does not exist” on Facebook. God apparently wasn’t around to punish him so the authorities took care of it on His behalf.
