Mary Trapani Hynes, a senior, was among the deputants who came to let Mayor Boss Hogg, his brother Donut Dougy and the rest of the clan know how they felt about cuts to services. She was more than likely the biggest hit of the day and the evening. She seemed to be a big hit on social media yesterday. If deadpan was what you were looking for, Ms Hynes certainly delivered. Let’s tune into what she said.
“I’m a senior living in North York and I have some modest proposals,” she hollered into the microphone. Hundreds who had been quietly chattering shushed themselves silent.
“First, the library. You’ve made a good start with closing the Metro branch. Don’t stop there. You should get rid of the entire public library system —”
Spectators exchanged confused glances.
“— As you can see from the thousands of petitions and emails complaining about proposed service cuts, far too many people use the library to improve literacy and to learn about government and politics. You would save millions.”
The room exploded in giggles. Echoes of cheering could be heard from the neighbouring committee room, which was handling the overflow. Many on the mayor’s executive committee couldn’t help but chuckle.
“While you’re at it,” Hynes continued. “Get rid of the city’s website information on how Toronto city government works and on how to access the city. You would save millions.”
Privatize the TCHC, she continued. If people can’t afford to live here, move out! Streetcars and buses have to go too. Make room for the cars. Don’t drive? Can’t handle the increased pollution? Then leave!
“Those residents that remain in Toronto will be those able to look after their own needs and there will be less need for government services. More money saved. And — win, win — your government can give them a rebate on their property taxes from their savings.”
She started trending on Twitter yesterday as #yellygranny. Fern Hill and Niles have come up with a new term and perhaps hash tag to describe the Toronto City Council meeting–#peoplesfilibuster. That might be an accurate description, they’re still at it this morning.
Yes, Mary Trapani for Mayor of Toronto!
I wonder if Giorgio ‘Gino Boy’ Mammoliti brought his video camera? Just never know when certain ‘enemies’ of his may show up. He just bitched about how too much is spent on immigrants. I don’t doubt that he probably takes his video camera everywhere in the hopes he can catch any of those dusky-skinned nameless people on the Harpercons’ most wanted list in the hopes he may get a cookie from Jason Kenny or Super Toews.
Oh and Giorgio, well into the evening, after din-din, when everyone is out of work, why didn’t all those Ford supporters come out and do like Tammy Wynette says and you know, stand by their man?? No time to stand by their man but always got time for Timmy Horton’s?
After the marathon meeting is over, any bets as to how long it’ll take for either Mayor Boss Hogg or Donut Dougy to really stick their foot in it and either bitch about the deputants that showed up? Or how long it took? Or something along those lines?
Looks like democracy can be a very boring thing for Mayor Boss Hogg.
UPDATE: Apparently, Mary T Hynes does not like the hashtag designated on twitter for her Thanks Fern Hill for letting us know.
