Well, it’s finally 2015, Ten Questions for my Candidates

I have some questions I will put to every candidate in my riding.

1)Will you commit to Election reform?  FPTP is not working.

2)Will you commit to restoring and enhancing the independence of Elections Canada and the Commissioner of Elections to compel witnesses and pursue fraudulent activities in our Elections, independent of Cabinet, up to and including a full inquiry (with subpoena powers) into the Robocalls fraud, in and out financing and disenfranchising voters?

3)Will you commit to eliminate Poverty, with a measurable timeline?  (Hint, Mincome)

4)Will you commit to restorative justice for our aboriginal population, specifically, addressing the disparity in educational, health and judicial outcomes?

5)Will you commit to R & D in renewables, such and geothermal, solar, wave and wind and redirect subsidies appropriately?  Away from fossil Fuels and towards jobs in renewables and science?

6)Will you please commit to protecting our wild oceans, whether they are marketable species or not yet recognised?  Will you commit to restoring the Navigable Waters Act, the Fisheries Act to reflect a commitment to protect our people, fish and waters?

7)Will you restore progressive taxation, tax the banks and chase the big offshore evaders *cough SNC Lavalin cough*?

8)Will you commit to creating food and products in Canada for Canadians and around the world, organically and sustainably and value adding them at home?

9)Will you commit to restoring Canada’s commitment to world peace, by providing peace keepers, emergency response teams and diplomatic strategies around the world?

10)Will you commit to represent your constituents, even when it may prove unpopular in Parliament?

Thanks,

Kim Poirier

Greta questions Kim. If I was running to be your federal representative I’d answer this way:
No, I wouldn’t change single-member-plurality; pro-rep has way more strike outs than allowed (three) and I think it’s better to focus on parliamentary procedure reform. Pro-rep has been rejected at referenda in three provinces, twice in BC, by twice the margin the second time as the first. But since this is a federal questionnaire, I would work for an elected Senate—using pro-rep, ten Senators per. Go figure!

I think the courts will restore Elections Canada’s independence, with my encouragement—like filing papers.

Eliminate poverty? Let’s get real here: a drastic reduction would be my commitment.

Restorative justice for First Nations? How about just justice and plain old fairness by way of treaties where there are none, and respect where there are? If I had my way, FNs could apply for provincehood, but that’s a job for provinces and citizens, too—that is, a constitutional amendment. No MP can do it alone, as is proper.

Yes to R&D for renewables, and might I add elimination of subsidies to non-renewables.

Yes to restoring the Harper era devastation regards our water resources.

Catching tax evaders? I’m your man.

I’m not sure I understand the food question. I’d want to send grain to those who need it, not necessarily baked-in-Canada bread.

    World peace? For sure!

Represent my constituents? How does one represent the 5% who want capital punishment, and the 95% who don’t, all at the same time? Execute 5% of murderers? Who decides that? (You might see one of the reasons I’m not very much for pro-rep.)

Great list, Kim! Wishing you all the best for the new year—it should be a very interesting one!

    Scotty
