I was scouring Memorandum last night and I see Atlas Shrugs blogger Pamela Geller is posting about her convo with Ezra Levant on Sun News (she calls it ‘Sun TV’). The subject is a topic I blogged about earlier: a Pennsylvania judge dismissed charges against a man for assaulting another because the victim, an atheist, was mocking Islam at a Halloween parade. (Note that there was also an atheist mocking the Pope.)
I was surprised by the story, not because it involved Islam but because the judgement, at least in regards to the news reports, seemed to be a travesty of justice – a judge absolving a violent attacker because they share the same religion. Topping that, the judge lectured the victim on showing more piety in the future for religion, especially towards the feelings of Muslims.
Now I see the story is still zooming around the rightosphere with Geller bragging about a Sun News appearance with Levant (I don’t think she knows how about small the Sun News audience actually is). It must have been an appalling interview of the two most Islamaphobic people on the planet going at it. But it’s not enough for me to go to the video or to link to all the rightblogs ranting about her appearance. You’ll have to wade through that yourself.
It does go to show how low Sun News is willing to go. Geller, whose news items are usually wildly untrue or gross exaggerations, is a loose cannon not even Fox News will go near these days. But Ezra, known for scraping the bottom of any barrel he can find, must have thought he had a a real scoop with Geller. A scoop of what I’ll leave to your imagination.
Of course Levant and Geller want to make this all about Sharia. This is really another example of activist right-wing judges using their religion to inject faith into the law. It’s not Sharia – it’s the tyranny of religion over reason and rights. Catholicism, Islam, Jewish faiths – it doesn’t matter. Religious preference should not hijack any judgement. Period.
UPDATE: I see Tucker Carlson, no stranger himself to the bottom of the barrel himself, features a Geller post about this story on his right-wing blog, the Foster Freiss*-funded Daily Caller. Appropriate.
* Freiss introducing the Daily Caller:
As for his new partners, Friess says by e-mail: “Tucker and Neil present a huge opportunity to re-introduce civility to our political discourse. They are mature, sensible men who are very thoughtful and experienced with pleasant senses of humor and do not take themselves too seriously.
“Civility” is a word that could never be applied to the Daily Caller by anyone other than the most uncivil of human beings.
