OK, the UN really is totally out to lunch. Harper tapped to lead women’s aid commission.

This is the most sickening bit of news I’ve heard in a year of sickening news. How can someone who has absolutely no respect for the rights of women be in charge of women’s issues?

OTTAWA — The head of the United Nations has appointed Canada’s prime minister to lead a group that aims to cut corruption in foreign aid for women and children’s health.

Stephen Harper spent 2010 pushing maternal and child health as a top issue for G8 leaders, and it looks like that focus will continue.

On Thursday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced Harper will co-chair the newly created Commission on Information and Accountability for Women and Children’s Health. Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete is the other co-chair.

A news release from Harper’s office said the commission will improve how health information is registered, collected and shared, and track money and other resources on women’s and children’s health.

“Canada’s participation in this commission means that we will continue to play a leadership role in helping the world meet both G8 and Millennium Development Goal Summit commitments — commitments that will help significantly reduce the appalling mortality rates among women and children in the developing world,” Harper said in the news release.

I really don’t understand this appointment. Why didn’t the UN skip Harper entirely and simply appoint NGO Monitor directly?
