And so it goes in modern Con-job Ottawa.
MacKay: I’ve got the media in my pocket. Bright, shiny jets on the horizon. The Cons are connin’ the country. Why should I care?
You askin’ me how much it will cost?
Who cares? This is Canada, baby!
Get me another beer, bitch.
Life is good.
The issue with these planes that everyone, including the opposition seems to ignore is whether or not they are even appropriate to Canada’s needs. I say unless we are going into the invading countries that actually have a military with sophisticated defense systems business – THEY ARE NOT.
They are single engine planes with limited range and even limited ability to navigate and/or target without a mother ship accompanying the squadron from above as they inflict shock and awe on Islamabad?, Tehran?, Caracas? Hardly suitable for flying from Toronto to Vancouver without refueling in air or with landings, much less protecting Canadian Sovereignty by patrolling the Artic and the coastlines. In order to maximize the stealth attack features, fuel capacity and instrumentation have both been sacrificed in the individual units and single engine planes have never been ideal for patrol duty in the North, where redundancy of a twin engine aircraft is highly desirable, at least from the point of view of the pilot who will find themselves at best (assuming successful ejection) stranded in the dark in 50 below weather if that one engine fails.
But under Harper perhaps the plan is to join the Empire to the South in their ongoing drive to occupy the known world either though shady financial manipulation or militarily when the first option fails!
