Yep, you read that right. A Canadian pro-business ‘guru’ not advocating a Harpercon majority. In fact, on his web site, he is promoting strategic voting to prevent that from happening. Sound odd? Perhaps to the pro-free market minions, but McGill University’s Henry Mintzberg provides some compelling reasons:
He fears that Harper’s brand of conservatism, which can be considerably more hard-edged and combative than Canadians have been used to, “puts at risk the things that make Canada different and wonderful” in a world he sees as increasingly dominated by “an unholy economic dogma of corporate entitlement.”
What’s this? A business type who actually cares about more than profit margins of fortune 500 companies? One who sees the perils of that unabashed greed that wrecked the American financial sector?
Mintzberg’s critique of the Harper government has less to do with specific policy positions than with an attitude that he sees as embodying the same unhealthy values that dominated the presidency of George W. Bush. Some key elements are the glorification of overpaid corporate leaders and short-term profits. That’s tied to the denigration of government’s role in providing a regulatory and socially conscious counterweight to business.
The U.S. financial crash and its devastating recession were directly related to this skewed view of the world, Mintzberg believes. As a result of Canada’s having followed a different path, with more willingness to let government regulate financial institutions, “we’re doing better than the Americans,” with an economy that suffered far less and unemployment that’s lower.
Yep, glad someone is admitting this. Makes me wonder how many other business people and economists also believe that a Harpercon majority is not good for Canada?
If Stevie Spiteful were to get his precious majority, no doubt he would deregulate the financial industry as Dubya did in the US. Don’t think he won’t do it if he gets his precious majority. Funny how folks think that Stevie is the dreamy economist and the economy is ‘sooo wonderful!’ I contend as I’m sure many would that if Stevie is let loose with that majority, our economic situation will surely end up worse than in the US.
Oh and Mintzberg is actually for a coalition government.
He also says that votes for the Bloc would actually better serve Canada.
By the way, a vote for the Bloc can serve Canada, because nothing will rekindle independentist sentiment in Quebec faster than a federal government on the far right, and especially one that allows the provinces to emasculate Medicare.
I would add that a Harpercon majority would further isolate Quebec in the Rest of Canada; further anti-Quebec sentiment would be fuelled.
Go to Mintzberg’s site, he has links to sites like Swing 33 and Catch 22 that promote strategic voting.
You’re right on the mark in saying that Harper will likely push deregulation if he has enough clout in terms of majority standing. Look also for undermining of medicare and the CBC.
Mintzberg deserves credit for taking a broader view of what is at stake here and really it boils down to the Canada we know and love.
