Canada’s thug-like Conservative-leaning media gets called out here, beginning with Sun Media.
“Yo Kory, I can trust you to push my agenda, right?” “Sure boss, just like Postmedia, right?” |
As progressive bloggers, this is what we need to be doing far more of. Right wingers in the USA waged a massive campaign for more than a decade with the meme of “liberal media”. It proved highly successful, as Sunday morning talk shows began overwhelmingly stacking their shows with Republican voices outnumbering Democratic ones, many times at a ration of 2 to 1. CNN hired a white supremacist blogger, following that up with a Breitbart trickster. No progressive voices from the blogosphere were added for balance.
Here in Canada, our media is at least 90 percent Conservative. We have lost almost all of our national progressive voices. Even the centre-left Huffington Post decided to launch its Canadian counterpart with a Conservative slant, promoting mostly young Conservative writers.
Yet we remain mostly quiet about this injustice in the delivery of news to Canadians. Even the grey lady of Canadian journalism – the Globe & Mail – is dominated by an editorial board just as far right as its Sun compatriots.
LOL @SUNTyPilson: We take each issue as it comes and form opinion accordingly |
That is why I am so happy to see this kind of reportage with the Gang of Seven expose. We need more voices to speak out. We should all be speaking out about this travesty of news dissemination. With the CBC under full frontal assault from the right and the Toronto Star being the only large progressive-oriented voice (relegated to a single city), our progressive journalists – especially our young journalists who have no future in an industry saturated with right wingers, it is our duty to fight back.
UPDATE: Speaking of right-wing doofusi, I can’t wait for Operation Maple to take on this bit of “bipartisan” hackery.
Informing the public about the editorial slant of Canada’s newspapers is a good idea. I have a hunch that most readers know the bias of their local paper. But I doubt they see the big picture.
Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive???
