UPDATE: Gabrielle Giffords is out of surgery and is very much alive.
Moderate Democrat Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others were shot at a public event in Tucson, AZ. Giffords was shot ‘point blank’ in the head. Fifteen to twenty shots were fired. Five are reported dead. One of the victims is a child.
She had previously been under threat of violence. It was at a Giffords event that a tea party member (corrected term) once famously dropped a gun.
Giffords was on Sarah Palin’s infamous ‘target map‘. The Congresswoman had been a strong supporter of health care reform.
In a website launched on Thursday, the six-month anniversary of the health care law, Palin puts a bull’s-eye on 20 House districts under a headline that reads, “We’ve diagnosed the problem…Help us prescribe the solution.”

CNN reports one 21-year-old suspect has been arrested. I caution anyone jumping to the conclusion that a conservative wacko is responsible for this attack. In such instances, it is often some mentally or emotionally sick person without any specific political reasons who commit such heinous crimes.
UPDATE: The right blogosphere is going nuts trying to blame this on Democrats. ??? They are jumping to the conclusion the left will automatically be blaming them. Small Dead Animals are just gnawing at the flesh, celebrating and crossing their collective fingers the assassin is a ‘leftist’. Then there is the sick progressive who decided it was funny to post this on Sarah Palin’s FB page. The right doesn’t have a monopoly on stupid.

an anti-Giffords event was held in June with the billing: “Get on Target for Victory in November. Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly.”
Jesse Kelly was her Tea party opponent in the last election

Actually, at this time, the HuffPost says the congresswoman is still alive and her doctors appear to be “optimistic” about her recovery, although they’re not sure what kind of recovery that will be.
The lastest update at 4;23 ET is the shooter who was arrested is name is Jared Loughner; doesn’t seem to be any other info about him or what motivated him.

Here’s Jared Loughner’s youtube channel: more videos. So far, I’ve seen nothing to indicate that he’s either right or left winged; just a very disturbed individual.

He doesn’t appear partisan to me either. But he certainly seems disturbed. I’m really curious why he chose Ms. Gifford as his target and if the rhetoric directed her way played a role. No matter what it will likely be sometime before we find out,if at all

Loughner not partisan it seems. Maybe not even crazy. Who knows? The person in his 50′s who is also ‘person of interest’ could likely to be the key to provide any motives. Maybe a mentor? It’s puzzling right now why Giffords and innocent bystanders – including a 9-year-old were included in the carnage. Perhaps there wasn’t any motive – who knows?
I don’t think there’s a political affiliation although Palin and many rightbloggers are using an unnamed source that supposedly knows the guy who says he’s left wing, liberal, a pot-head and a rocker. I guess that just about says dirty fucking hippie. I love the way these people never have named sources and they never turn out to exist.
