I have noticed folks, particularly the socon crowds like Jojo and folks like Suzy ALLCAPSLOCK would seem to go so far as to keep the child abuse scandals covered up behind the walls of the Catholic Church.
It is to them I ask this question: Would you be so forgiving or willing to help the church cover their crimes if it were your own children who were abused? Speaking of which, if your children came to you and told you they were touched inappropriately or abused by your parish priests or another priest, really; who would you believe first? Your child or the priests?
Now the double standard: If you answered ‘priests’ to the above question: what would the answer be if it were just any pedophile, stranger or not outside of the clergy? Would you first believe your child or them?
It seems that the pedophile hockey coach, Graham James , received a pardon quietly in 2007. Many, including the Federal government it would seem are outraged, as well everyone should be. I wonder if folks like Hunter, Jojo and of course, Suzy are outraged over the pardon of Graham James? My guess would be ‘yes’. If so, then why is he any different than a priest who abuses?
Just askin’….
I’m sorry that you didn’t understand the intent of my post, which was to say that people shouldn’t give up on Christ because of what is going on in the Catholic Church. There are problems in the church and they need to be dealt with and I think any pedophiles should be given a fair trial in a criminal court.
The clergy is made up of human beings who are inherently flawed and sinful just like the rest of us. A good priest tries to help his parishioners find the right path, but sadly there are some that take advantage of their positions of trust for their own gratification.
Whether they are priests or hockey coaches they are the scum of the earth.
“The clergy is made up of human beings who are inherently flawed and sinful just like the rest of us.”
I don’t know about you, Joanne, but I don’t have a history of abusing children and then covering it up. You’re certainly welcome to equivocate yourself to pedophile priests, but please leave the rest of us out of it.
The problems in the Catholic church don’t get dealt with by simply throwing up one’s hands and saying “Oh well, we’re all fallen creatures” or “it was just a few bad apples that the courts should deal with”. Interrupting the pattern starts with the acknowledgment that something is wrong.
Obviously I am having trouble making my position understood here and since I can’t think of any other way to clarify it, I’ll leave you to your own interpretations which I’m sure you’ll be more comfortable with anyway.
Joanne, I’m trying to address a double standard here. You want to forgive these pedophile priests. Suzy ALLCAPS wants the cover-up to continue, yet, since the both of you pretty much follow any mantra of Steve, which today is….outrage over the discrete pardon of Graham James. As well, there should be. He shouldn’t ever be able to have a job around kids. What I’m saying is, neither should priests who have abused children.
I’m betting that folks like you and Suzanne believe in condemning civilians like Mr. James, but only too eager to forgive priests.
You never answered another question I had; would you allow a priest you knew was convicted of sexual abuse, to be alone with your kid(s)?
