Autumn Musings

Autumn arrived rather suddenly on the wet coast this year.  The jet stream did it’s autumnal thing and turned the taps back on.  We breathe a collective sigh of relief this year, another fire season passed in our forests.  Our rivers will flood with enough water for the salmon to return and we feel blessed that return they did, those precious Fraser River sockeye.  Despite the best efforts of the BC Government and the DFO, under the dubious management of Gail Shea, Minister of Aquaculture.

One of the most influential people of the salmon and an inspiration to me is Alexandra Morton.  She has taken on all of the stupid politics that created this impending disaster we call aquaculture.  She is a voice of reason, science and principle in a time of crisis for our wild salmon and all of the ecology that depends on them.  You can learn much from Alexandra at http://www.salmonaresacred.org/  Please support her in any way you can.

Speaking of fish, here in BC, Steven Harper’s environmental policies come home to poison us with Taseko Mines proposal for Fish Lake, and Little Fish Lake.  These are the watershed for the mighty Fraser.  Yup, tailings ponds.  They had the balls to propose using this pristine watershed as a tailings pond and they were going to “Build” a FAKE LAKE to compensate!  http://www.fonv.ca/news_and_events/newsfishlake   A decision is pending from the HarperCons.  Any bets?

The Globe and mail weighs in. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/british-columbia/the-political-storm-watch-on-fish-lake/article1703514/   I like the comment, my money’s on the natives.  Personally, I stand with them.  And its not just “natives and environmentalists” that stand against it.

The Tyee, also has an update from the good people of Hartley Bay.  These are the same people who rescued the passengers from the ill-fated Queen of the North.

This last week was somewhat of a watershed for me, its like the rains expanded my roots too.  Posting my thoughts online has been a liberating and at the same time terrifying experience and I would like to express my thanks to ck for the opportunity.  And thanks to everyone who has taken the time to consider my thoughts.
