Killer video featuring everday women and artists performing Lesley Gore’s classic (and way before its time), “You Don’t Own Me.”
Gore herself adds at the end: “I recorded ‘You Don’t Own Me’ in 1964. It’s hard for me to believe but we’re still fighting for the same things we were then. Yes ladies, we’ve go to come together, get out there and vote, and protect our bodies. They’re ours. Please vote”
The words are substantial enough but listen to the rhythm of the presentation. “The way she talks, it’s almost jazz.”
Here’s a live 1964 version.
“Keep your rosaries off my ovaries.”
UPDATE: Looks like Garance Franke-Ruta at the Atlantic saw this post and built on it. Or, it’s a coincidence. ;} A link would have been nice.
This is brilliant. Thanks to everybody who put it out for us to see and share.
